We're still have a lot to learn about Mexican music, but there's at least one song we can always recognize and sing along with because it's so damn ubiquitous: "Cielito Lindo." (Lyrics here, MP3 here.) Today one of our best friends here casually mentioned that her great-grandfather wrote it. This is a little like learning that your friend's great-grandpa wrote "Happy Birthday", or "Take Me Out to the Ballgame" - except that we probably hear "Cielito Lindo" three times a day, unlike, say, "Happy Birthday."
Great-grandpa was an artist, not a businessman: he sold the rights to the song for five pesos. Appropriately, the refrain is "Sing, don't cry"...
