The New Phonebook's Here! The New Phonebook's Here!

In case you think we live in some dusty little flyspeck, check out the thickness of the latest Querétaro phonebook, which just arrived yesterday. We're not in it - if we were, we'd be between Kostarenko, Anatoliy, and Kovalsky, Marcos - but it's interesting to see that the entire "K" section takes up just one and a half columns of one page, with most of the names being obviously foreign. No wonder everyone can tell I'm not Mexican. My name begins with K.

Unlike New York, where they toss a big pile of these things into the lobby of your building and that's that, here a guy comes to your door, makes you fill out a form, takes back your old phonebook, and then hangs around making small talk until you give him a tip. We actually didn't get a new phonebook last year because the transaction was so complicated and baffling to me that I just panicked and slammed the door on the guy. So I had to tip him double this year.
