While I Was Out

At some point over the last six months, Americans - or at least the ones who work in TV - appear to have replaced the word "call" with the phrase "reach out," as in, "I'm planning to reach out to them later on," or, "Thanks for reaching out to me."

Why was this done? And more importantly, what will it take to make it stop?

He's right. They used the phrase over and over.
If you get a chance, reach out to us.

A rule of thumb applies here: A "reach out" is annoying but OK. A "reach around" is invasive and not OK.
