OG: Original Gringo

USA Today has a nice piece about one of Mexico's great guilty pleasures, Gringo en Mexico, a travel show which, as the title implies, is about Mexico, hosted by a gringo. It's unintentionally hilarious, mostly due to the appalling American accent of the host, Robert Alexander - our uncanny imitation always get a laugh (mostly because it's not that much of a stretch for us, really.) Also, it often appears that, as he rolls into towns to cover various festivals and events, that no one bothered to give the locals any advanced warning, which gives the show an Office-like level of squirmy discomfort at times.

It's impossible to do justice this guy's accent in print, which is probably why the paper posted a video clip as well. We've long been amazed that he isn't a YouTube sensation. Hopefully this will fix that.

¡Disfruten!

Hi, did you look on YouTube? There are a couple of his GEM shows, but he calls himself Robert(?)

And there are a couple of his shows that have been dubbed over with rude slang...

Are they sure he's really appreciated by regular folks in Mexico? Seems like that part might not be quite true...

We're guessing he calls himself Robert because that's his name. But could you define "regular" for us?

hmmm you are of course correct, I registered in my thoughts that his name is Alexander and so didn't understand it when he held up a big sign that said Robert on it.
Had been thinking about the part of the article that said that people thought his name was Gem, maybe as in Jim, and I thought his name was Alexander, just as bad...

You know, Jose Bolsa de Donas tv viewer. The only reason I mentioned it is because the youtube videos that were dubbed seemed a touch more hostile than adoring, and there were about as many of those as there were of the undubbed ones. Then wondered if the people who own the businesses featured on the programs are mostly happy because of the free advertising seen by millions. Would they be just as happy if it was just Robert and no film crew? Just wondering... what do you think?

We only care what Jose El Plomero thinks.
