The Queen Is Dead! Long Live The Queen!

Speaking of transitions, can it really be true that the reign of Begoña I, Queen of the 2007 Christmas Festival is almost over? Boy, life is what happens when you're busy making other plans, no? But as with any hereditary monarchy, we expect a smooth transfer-of-power on Dec 5, when the scepter and tiara are passed to 17-year-old Alejandra Zárate Gutiérrez, henceforth to be known as Alejandra III. Her Highness can be glimpsed in the photo at right, partly eclipsed by the big ol' mound of goofball tartare known as Paco Garrido, governor of Querétaro. (If you're still confused, the one with the smaller boobs is the beauty queen.)

With the global financial meltdown continuing unabated, Alejandra is inheriting quite a mess from her predecessor. Our prayers and good wishes are with her.
