Not So Much Like a Virgen

Playboy Mexico is apparently kicking off the Christmas season with a heartwarming holiday pictorial:

A nude model resembling the Virgin Mary on the cover of the Mexican edition of Playboy magazine, published only days before a major Mexican festival dedicated to the mother of Jesus, prompted the company's U.S. headquarters on Friday to apologize.

Presumably Playboy Mexico is published by, y'know, Mexicans, or at least has a few Mexicans working for it in some capacity. We're neither Mexicans nor good Catholics ourselves, but if someone came to us and said, "You know, we're thinking of doing a naked spread on the Virgin Mary and publishing it in Mexico around the time of the Fiesta de Nuestra Señora de Guadalupe. Would that offend anyone?" we'd probably nod rather vigorously. But then we've been in New York for a few weeks, and clearly no one had our cellphone.

"While Playboy Mexico never meant for the cover or images to offend anyone, we recognize that it has created offense, and we as well as Playboy Mexico offer our sincerest apologies," the statement said.

Of course, Playboy's apology is no less credible than the idea that La Virgen appeared before Juan Diego and filled his cape with roses and an image of herself, so let's apportion blame equally and move on.

Pics are here. [NSFMexico]

Never have the words "full of grace" rung so true to me. Holy Mother of God!

I've never thought of the Virgin Mary as being quite so... how to say... perky.
