Always Look On the Bright Side of Life

His Papaness's "I'm a Total Dick" tour hit Mexican soil running yesterday, unleashing a brutal 10-minute simultaneous assault by every churchbell in the entire country - which we happily missed because we were stuck in traffic on Bernardo Quintana at the time.  Querétaro is full of "Welcome Benedicto" banners, even though it's about as far from where the pope is as Foxboro is from the Meadowlands, yet you didn't see the former festooned with "Welcome Super Bowl Champs!" signs.  This is is the house three doors down from us, just praying that the motorcade goes 150 miles off-course:

Though the theme of the pope's visit is "ya basta with violence already!" Deborah Bonello at MexicoReporter notes that, by visiting Guanajuato rather than Mexico City, he's giving the papal thumbs up to a city where 168 women have been jailed for having abortions or miscarriages. Admittedly, this is an unsurprising position for the pope to take, but if you're going to fly all the way to Mexico, why be so damn predictable?

Even when the pope is on-message, he's been kind of a dick about it:

Pope Benedict emphasized that Mexico’s violence was caused by greed. The church, he told reporters on the papal plane, has a “great responsibility” in a country that is 83 percent Catholic to guide young people away from that false promise, “to educate the conscience, teach moral responsibility and strip off the mask, the idolatry of money that enslaves mankind.”
Honestly, it's enough to make you side with the Totally Awesome Zetas.  Even though the question of whether thou shalt or shalt not kill is pretty clearly spelled out in the Book of Exodus, Benny16 goes to his safe place - the same "be content with your lot in life" con the gold-clad leaders of the Church have been pushing on poor people here since 1521.  His big outdoor mass this Sunday should be a wonder of inspiration.
