The Chicken: Sadly, No Longer My Cock

It seemed to us that Juan Arturo "El Pollo" Torres Landa had a foolproof strategy for becoming mayor of Querétaro:  1) Be really rich. 2) Be really well connected. 3) Run an extremely obscure ad campaign centered on a couple of hole-in-the-wall roast chicken joints.  We figured, it's all over but the ballot-stuffing!

But no - yesterday The Chicken announced he was folding his campaign, and would be devoting more  time to being really, really rich - a point he underscored by holding the press conference at the private golf club he owns.

We of course have no dog in this cockfight, but are fascinated by the level of nepotism here.   The Chicken is the brother of Juan Ignacio Torres Landa, currently running for governor of Guanajuato - a job held 50 years ago by their father, Juan José Torres Landa.  Had he stayed in the race and won, The Chicken would be working with Querétaro's governor, Jose Calzada, son of former governor Antonio Calzada (1973-79).  Instead, the PRI's candidate for mayor will be the current government secretary Roberto Loyola, whose brother, Ignacio, was governor from 1997-2003.

The talent pool is pretty shallow here.

The United States would never allow such nepotism into politics !!!!

We Americans would never elect the son of a former president to follow in his father's foot-steps.
