Scenes From a Banana Republic

This is a shot from the Querétaro Women's Day Fair in Plaza Constitución this morning, where the Health Secretariat has a stand handing out free, taxpayer-financed contraceptives, right there, in broad daylight, in a city so insanely Catholic, it makes the Vatican look like, um...er... ancient Rome? (God, we hate it when a metaphor falls of its horse in midstream.)

Anyway, because Mexico is backwards, unenlightened, and whatever the opposite is of cosmopolitan, no one had the good sense to protest! There were no all-male, all-clergy panel discussions about "religious freedom," and though Radio Querétaro was broadcasting just 30 feet away, no one got called a slut or a prostitute.

What a strange place. And you can't even drink the water here.
