SMA's Finest

A couple of years back we were driving into San Miguel for a meeting and found ourselves shaken down by local cops to the tune of 23 bucks, which we assumed at the time was just a tax on us for the crime of Driving While Gringo.  (Though if you're planning to make a sport of soaking the gringos, doing it in one of the few places in Mexico where they have any real clout is not the best-thought-out plan we've ever heard.)

Turns out, as is often the case, the gringos have it better than the Mexicans.  Here we have a pair of brothers from Querétaro driving into SMA.  They're pulled over by the cops, who tell them to get out of the car.  The brothers - clearly aware of this blog's maxim that there is no situation that has ever been improved by the arrival of the Mexican police - refuse, and ask instead why, exactly, they're being detained.  The answer boils down to, "Fuck you, that's why."

This happens all over Mexico, every day, to people who don't have video cellphones and YouTube accounts.

Which is precisely why I always travel with TWO wallets in Mexico when I'm driving. One with about $5 in it and an expired license -- the other (well hidden) has all my real stuff in it. This sort of thing really is BS and it's maddening that it still occurs with such alarming frequency.
